My current apartment has a dishwasher. Let me repeat that, my current apartment has a dishwasher. This is getting extra attention because I’ve been apartment living since 2003 - and never experienced the wonder of not doing the dishes until this most recent move.
Glad we got that out of the way. Since I’ve lived in a land of hand-washing, I’ve always had a ton of kitchen towels and some type of permanent drying rack (My favorite was this stainless steel one from IKEA that sat on a stainless counter top - it looked like it was built in). But this has all changed. I cleaned out my old linens and waved goodbye to that drying rack since I now had a modern marvel in my kitchen.
However, I’m sad to report that there is still hand-washing to be done. I can never really say goodbye to that chore. Stemmed bar ware, cast iron pans and that last glass I forgot to put in the dishwasher all conspire to make sure I still have dish soap in stock and a high tolerance for hot water.
Which just circles me back to the original problem one faces with hand-washing - where do you put the dishes when they need to dry? Sure, counter top Jenga is a great game, but not when the topple-over means broken glass everywhere. Well, today I found this: a topography inspired piece of design wonderment that’s going to solve all, er, at least one of my problems.
