This is a photo of Austurstræti, one of Reykjavík’s oldest streets, taken at Christmas time in the mid- to late 1950s. The parking lot on the right was originally the site of the city’s fifth oldest hotel, the Hótel Ísland, which opened in 1882 and was destroyed in a fire in 1944. In the sixties the car park became a gathering place for the city’s youth, and got a particularly hard-to-translate nickname, Hallærisplanið. (“Uncool Square” or “Insufficiency Park” come close, but not really). In the mid-nineties the city built a new square, Ingólfstorg, to replace what were by then car parks on both sides of the street. Still popular with young people (skaters have replaced punks and hipsters), it’s used for concerts and other events in summer. In winter it has occasionally been turned into a skating rink.

While most of us have our holiday traditions to look forward to, I think its fun to mix it up every year with something new. For Thanksgiving this year, I was in charge of desserts (a big, sorta scary first for me) and table setting (old-hat, but I still tried to make it interesting). I also learned a quick way to make quiche. Here’s the scoop on each:

Thanksgiving Dessert (both recipes from Diana’s Desserts)

Cranberry-Pear Crisp

Spiced Pumpkin Torte with Nut Topping

Thanksgiving Table Setting (fold instructions here)

Waterlily Napkins

Thanksgiving Breakfast

Quiche

This one is crazy simple: Get a frozen pie shell, fill it with desired ingredients until is about 2/3 full (I used cubed ham, cheddar, parsley). Beat three eggs and a cup of milk together and pour over your toppings in the pie crust. Bake it in a 350 degree oven for an hour. Check with a toothpick. enjoy!

This tiny printer is just one of the cool things I’ve...

This tiny printer is just one of the cool things I’ve learned about from this new site: hellobrit.com founded by one of my friends, Brit Morin.

Go Forth and Fold my friends!

1. With the sheet inside out, place one hand in each of two adjacent corners.

2. Bring your right hand to your left, and fold the corner in your right hand over the one in your left, so the corner on top is right side out. Next, reach down and pick up the corner that is adjacent to the one that was in your right hand (it will be hanging in front), and fold it over the other two; this third corner will be inside out.

3. Bring the last corner up, and fold it over the others so it is right side out.

4. Lay the sheet flat, and straighten it into the shape shown above.

5. Fold the two edges in, folding the edge with elastic in first, so all elastic is hidden.

6. Fold the strip into a smaller rectangle.

7. Continue folding until rectangle is the size you want.

note: directions made for a right-handed person; if you are a “leftie” then use the hand opposite the one suggested above

image via Martha Stewart

Saturday evening, after running some errands, I...

Yep, Just me.

Saturday evening, after running some errands, I popped into a place I’ve passed a thousand times for a quick dinner (and hello, sushi is always a go). It didn’t really hit me until I was leaving that I totally rocked a meal out on the town by myself (and I wasn’t even on my phone the whole time).

When it did hit me, an old Friends episode immediately came to mind:

Rachel: Oh, that’s right. (sits down) I wish I was one of those people who could eat in restaurants alone.

Monica: You should try it. It’s a really good thing to do.

Rachel:I just think I’d feel really self-conscious, y’know? Like I was on display or something.

Phoebe: Nah, I was on display once. Nothing like eating alone.

After a quick Internet search, turns out there’s quite a few articles and even books on the subject of eating alone (Bet you can guess the most popular title: Table for One, Please).

Rachel: I’d love to, but I have plans on Sunday.

Guy: Well, maybe some other time.

Rachel: Sure. Just give me call; I’m in the book.

Guy: Okay. Thanks a lot. See you. (leaves)

(Monica runs over to Rachel on the couch.)

Monica: What are you doing? He is cute and he’s a doctor.

Rachel: How do you know?

Monica: Honey, I eavesdrop because I care.

Rachel: Well, I have plans on Sunday.

Monica: With who?

Rachel: With me.

Monica: Oh god!

Rachel: What-what? You are the one who told me how important it is to spend time alone. I can’t just go out with that guy when I have plans by myself. Wouldn’t be fair to me.

Monica: So basically you’re saying you don’t want to cheat on yourself?

Rachel: Well, if you wanna make me sound crazy.

I don’t know that I’ll be making a habit of flying solo at a restaurant, but I definitely won’t be avoiding plans with other people just to get in that “me-time”.

[Scene: A Restaurant called Wicked Pete’s Brews. Rachel is dining by herself.]

Rachel: (in her head) I don’t know if this is working out. I think…I think I wanna see other people. (closes her eyes for a second) Wow. Didn’t see that one coming. It’s not that I don’t enjoy this. I do. I just wanna see what else is out there. (The guy that Rachel was talking to earlier in the coffee house walks in. Rachel sees him.) (Out loud) Hey Guy.

Guy: Hey.

Rachel: What are you doing here?

Guy: I work across the street.

Rachel:Oh, y’know what? It turns out I’m gonna be free Sunday.

Guy:Ahh, y’know? I wish you had called me. I just told them I’d work this weekend.

Rachel: Oh, okay. Well, maybe next weekend.

Guy: Definitely! I’ll see ya.

Rachel: Okay. (They both shake hands.)

Guy: (in his head) Yeah, you’ll be talking to me never, because you’re a freak who eats alone.

So the question is: Would you eat alone in a restaurant?

Lady Gaga’s go-to Jameson drink.
